Iyovwaye Rejects Urhobo Monarchs' Endorsement of Oborevwori

Deacon Chris Iyovwaye, the governorship candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress in Delta State, has publicly rejected the endorsement of Sheriff Oborevwori as the “sole candidate” of the Urhobo Nation for the 2027 governorship election. Iyovwaye stated that he will not withdraw from the race, emphasizing that the endorsement by the Ukoko R’Ivie R’Urhobo, a forum of Urhobo traditional rulers, does not override the democratic rights of the electorate.

He expressed respect for the traditional rulers but asserted that the authority to elect the governor lies solely with the voters, as stipulated in the 1999 Constitution of Nigeria. Iyovwaye highlighted the importance of unity among the diverse ethnic groups in Delta State and argued that the governorship should not be determined by ethnic consensus.

He called for a focus on the performance of candidates rather than endorsements, urging voters to consider the tangible benefits of government spending and the need for meaningful economic transformation in the state.
