Christian Group Cautions Sharia Council on INEC's Neutrality for 2027 Elections

In a statement, the Christian Social Movement of Nigeria (CSMN) cautioned the Supreme Council for Sharia in Nigeria (SCSN) against pressuring INEC along religious lines for the 2027 elections. The SCSN had demanded the resignation of INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan, accusing him of lacking neutrality.

CSMN emphasized the need to protect the nation's unity and constitution through legal procedures, urging against religious interference in the electoral process to prevent escalating tensions. The group highlighted the importance of maintaining a fair and balanced electoral system to uphold trust in INEC and promote national unity.

CSMN called for clearer legal interpretations of Sharia within Nigeria's legal framework to reduce suspicions and avoid deepening religious imbalances. The appeal aimed to foster dialogue among religious leaders, civil society groups, and politicians to prevent unrest and uphold constitutional processes.
