INEC to Release Revised Timetable for 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) will release a revised timetable for the 2027 general elections, as confirmed by Chief Press Secretary Adedayo Oketola. Although specific dates for the timetable revision were not disclosed, Oketola assured that INEC's activities will adhere to the laws of the country.

The presidential and national assembly elections are scheduled for February 20, 2027, while the governorship and state assembly elections will take place on March 6, 2027. This announcement follows a recent demand from political parties and stakeholders for a new timetable.

Additionally, there are concerns regarding potential clashes with the holy month of Ramadan, which may affect citizen participation. The National Assembly recently passed the Electoral Act 2026, which reduces the mandatory notice period for elections from 360 days to 300 days, allowing INEC more flexibility in scheduling the elections, particularly for the presidential and national assembly elections planned for late December 2026 and January 2027.
