INEC Schedules 2027 Elections for January and February

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has announced that the Presidential and National Assembly elections will take place on January 16, 2027, while the Governorship and State Assembly elections are set for February 6, 2027. This decision was communicated by INEC's Chairman, Mohammed Haruna, during a statement in Abuja.

The adjustments to the electoral timeline were made in accordance with the newly enacted Electoral Act 2026, which necessitated a review of the electoral schedule to ensure compliance with the new legal framework. The commission has also outlined that party primaries will commence on April 23, 2026, and conclude on May 30, 2026.

Campaigns for the Presidential and National Assembly elections will begin on August 19, 2026, and for the Governorship and State Assembly elections on September 9, 2026. The last day for submission of candidates for the Presidential and National Assembly elections is set for September 12, 2026, with the final day for campaign activities being January 14, 2027.
