Senate Moves to Amend Electoral Law for 2027 Elections

The Nigerian Senate began a legislative process on Tuesday to amend the Electoral Act 2022, aiming to shift the dates of the February 2027 general elections away from significant religious observances, specifically Ramadan and Lent. This move follows concerns from Muslim groups that the elections could coincide with the Ramadan fasting period, which is expected to begin in February 2027, while the Christian Lenten season is anticipated to extend into March.

Senate leader Opeyemi Bamidele explained that the current legal provisions require the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to issue election notices at least 360 days before the polls, leaving no room for adjustments unless the law is revised. The Senate invoked its power to reopen discussions on this matter, which had been previously closed on January 26, due to identified technical errors and inconsistencies in the bill.

The proposed amendments aim to respect Nigeria's religious diversity and ensure broad public participation in the electoral process, which is critical for the credibility of the elections.
