Senate Moves to Adjust 2027 Election Dates Amid Concerns

The Nigerian Senate has initiated a legislative process to amend the Electoral Act 2022, addressing concerns regarding the February 2027 general elections coinciding with significant religious observances, specifically Ramadan and Lent. Senate leader Opeyemi Bamidele disclosed that a formal request from Muslim groups prompted this review, warning that the proposed election dates could fall within the Ramadan fasting period.

The Senate noted that the Christian Lenten season is expected to extend into March 2027, potentially overlapping with the electoral calendar. The amendment aims to allow the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to adjust the election timetable, which is currently mandated to be at least 360 days before the polls.

Bamidele emphasized that the initiative is not politically motivated but seeks to ensure fair participation in the electoral process. The Senate has invoked its power to revisit previous resolutions, identifying technical errors in the earlier bill passed on January 26, which created legal ambiguities.

The proposed changes aim to respect Nigeria's religious diversity and enhance public confidence in the electoral process.
