INEC Proposes ₦873.78 Billion Budget for 2027 Elections

Professor Mahmood Yakubu, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), stated that electronic transmission of election results is essential for the 2027 general elections, despite the significant cost involved. During a presentation to the joint committee on electoral matters in the National Assembly, he proposed a budget of ₦873.78 billion, which includes costs for electoral operations, administration, technology, capital, and miscellaneous provisions.

Yakubu noted that the current budgetary system undermines INEC's financial autonomy and urged lawmakers to adjust the proposal to ensure adequate funding for personnel welfare. He disclosed plans to increase allowances for National Youth Service Corps members serving as ad hoc staff during elections.

The budget proposal reflects a commitment to technological deployment, which is mandated by the Electoral Act of 2022. Lawmakers, including Adebayo Balogun and Simon Lalong, acknowledged the need for credible elections and discussed the financial strains caused by frequent elections, emphasizing the importance of proper funding and preparation for the upcoming electoral activities.
