INEC Urges Journalists to Combat Misinformation Ahead of 2027

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has called on journalists and newsroom managers to bolster fact-checking and digital verification systems in light of artificial intelligence-driven misinformation as the 2027 general elections approach. INEC warned media organizations against publishing unofficial election results, stating that premature reporting could create conflicting narratives and erode public confidence in the official electoral process.

This message was delivered by INEC Chairman, Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, who was represented by Dr. Chukwuemeka Chukwu, the Resident Electoral Commissioner for Enugu State, during the 22nd All Nigeria Editors Conference (ANEC) 2026 in Enugu. Amupitan highlighted the challenges posed by generative artificial intelligence, deepfake videos, and automated bot networks, which complicate the distinction between authentic and manipulated election information.

He cautioned that misinformation could transform elections into emotionally charged environments, undermining civic engagement and public trust.
