Shettima Calls for Stronger Media Standards Ahead of 2027 Elections

Vice President Kashim Shettima addressed the 22nd All Nigeria Editors Conference organized by the Nigerian Guild of Editors (NGE) in Enugu, emphasizing the need for editors and journalists to strengthen professional standards, fact-checking, and verification mechanisms to combat AI-generated disinformation ahead of the 2027 elections. He noted that the rapid development of artificial intelligence poses challenges for the media, making false information appear credible.

Shettima acknowledged the reforms of President Bola Tinubu's administration, stating they are beginning to show improvements across various sectors, but the true measure of success will be their impact on the cost of living and quality of life for Nigerians. Governors Peter Mbah and Umar Namadi also urged the media to uphold responsible reporting to protect the integrity of the upcoming elections.

Mbah highlighted the importance of transparency and accountability from the government, while Namadi praised the NGE for promoting ethical journalism standards.
