INEC's Amupitan Calls for Funding to Secure 2027 Elections

On September 23, 2026, Prof. Joash Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), addressed the critical need for adequate funding to ensure security and logistics for the successful conduct of the 2027 general elections. Speaking in Owerri, Imo State, during the sixth edition of the Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers, Amupitan highlighted that while INEC's funding is constitutionally guaranteed as a first-line charge on the Consolidated Revenue Fund, the extensive responsibilities of the commission necessitate sustained financial support.

He pointed out that INEC oversees not only presidential and National Assembly elections but also governorship and state House of Assembly elections, voter registration, and political party registration. Amupitan stressed that security is integral to the electoral process and that inadequate logistics could undermine elections even if security is maintained.

He underscored the importance of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) in coordinating election security efforts among relevant agencies.
