INEC's Joash Amupitan Calls for Funding for 2027 Elections

Professor Joash Amupitan, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), stated that adequate funding is essential for ensuring the security and logistics necessary for the successful conduct of the 2027 general election. Speaking in Owerri at the sixth edition of the Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers, Amupitan noted that funding is crucial for deploying personnel and electoral materials across local government areas, wards, registration areas, and polling units.

He mentioned that while INEC's funding is constitutionally guaranteed as a first-line charge on the Consolidated Revenue Fund, the scale of its responsibilities requires ongoing financial support. Amupitan highlighted that INEC oversees not only presidential and National Assembly elections but also governorship and state Houses of Assembly elections, voter registration, and political party registration.

He stressed that an accurate voters' register is vital for credible elections and that security and logistics are priorities under his leadership. Amupitan also discussed the role of the Inter-Agency Consultative Committee on Election Security (ICCES) in coordinating election security.
