INEC Reveals New Guidelines for 2027 Elections

On Tuesday, the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), led by Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan, unveiled revised guidelines for political parties in preparation for the 2027 general elections.

The new regulations, designed to align with the Electoral Act 2026, aim to address gaps identified in previous frameworks and enhance the credibility of the electoral process. Key provisions include measures to improve transparency in candidate selection, campaign financing, and party operations.

The guidelines also emphasize the importance of engaging women, youth, and persons with disabilities in the political process. Dr.

Yusuf Dantal, Chairman of the Inter-Party Advisory Council, raised concerns about unresolved issues within the Electoral Act 2026 that could undermine the credibility of the upcoming elections. The general elections are scheduled for January 16, 2027, for presidential and national assembly polls, and February 6, 2027, for governorship and state assembly elections.
