2027: INEC warns political parties against premature campaigns

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a warning to political parties in Nigeria against engaging in premature campaigns for the 2027 elections. This warning comes in response to a surge in early political activities, including billboard endorsements and public statements hinting at presidential ambitions.

INEC's Chief Press Secretary, Rotimi Oyekanmi, emphasized that the Commission has not yet released a timetable for the 2027 election, and any campaigning at this stage is illegal. The Electoral Act of 2022 stipulates that campaigning for a political party shall commence 150 days before polling day and end 24 hours prior to the election.

Oyekanmi urged political parties to adhere to the law, as the Commission expects full compliance during the upcoming election cycle.
