INEC Warns of Insecurity Threatening 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has issued a warning regarding the threat of insecurity to the conduct of free, fair, and credible elections in the upcoming 2027 general elections. This warning was articulated by INEC Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan during the sixth Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers in Owerri, Imo State.

Amupitan stated that the security situation in various parts of Nigeria could jeopardize the successful conduct of the elections scheduled for January 16 and February 6, 2027, if not adequately addressed. He highlighted that insecurity, electoral violence, and vote-buying are major concerns that could affect the electoral process.

Amupitan called for thorough security risk analyses and proactive measures from security agencies to identify potential flashpoints. He affirmed INEC's commitment to collaborating with security agencies and stakeholders to protect voters, electoral officials, and sensitive materials during the elections, stressing the importance of effective coordination among security agencies.
