INEC Identifies Six Threats to 2027 Elections

The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), led by Chairman Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, identified six major threats to the 2027 general elections during a meeting in Abuja with a Pre-Election Assessment Mission (PEAM) from the International Republican Institute (IRI), headed by Ambassador Jendayi Frazier. Amupitan emphasized that these threats could undermine voter confidence and pose significant challenges if not addressed.

He noted that INEC is preparing to deploy approximately 1.4 million ad-hoc personnel across over 176,000 polling units nationwide. The commission is utilizing the Automated Biometric Identification System (ABIS) to maintain a clean National Register of Voters.

Recent elections have tested INEC's logistics and technology, with the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System (BVAS) achieving over 98% upload rates for results. INEC is also collaborating with security agencies and anti-corruption bodies, including the EFCC and ICPC, to enforce campaign finance regulations and monitor electoral offences.
