Jonathan Weighs 2027 Presidential Bid Amid Legal Challenge

Former President Goodluck Jonathan is contemplating a return to the presidential race in the 2027 elections, emphasizing the need for extensive consultations before making a decision. He made these remarks during a visit from a youth group at his office in Abuja.

Jonathan stressed that the race for Nigeria's highest office is not a game and highlighted the importance of leadership that considers the country's needs. Meanwhile, a federal high court in Abuja is scheduled to hear a suit filed by lawyer Johnmari Jideobi, which seeks to declare Jonathan ineligible to contest the presidential election due to allegedly exceeding the constitutional limit for holding office.

The suit requests the court to restrain the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) from accepting Jonathan's candidacy. The case is marked as FHC/ABJ/CS/2102/2025, with Justice Peter Lifu ordering the hearing.

Jonathan has previously served two terms and is being challenged on the grounds that he has exhausted his constitutional limits.
