Nigerian National Assembly Proposes Early 2026 Elections to Reduce Disputes

The Nigerian National Assembly has proposed shifting the 2027 Presidential and Governorship elections to November 2026, six months earlier than the usual schedule, to minimize post-election disputes. The amendments to the Electoral Act unveiled during a public hearing aim to ensure that election litigations are concluded before the swearing-in of newly elected leaders on May 29, 2027.

The proposed changes mark a significant shift in Nigeria's electoral timeline since 1999. The amendments also seek to shorten the duration of election litigations in tribunals and appellate courts to prevent delays in the handover process.

Hon Adebayo Balogun, the Chairman of the House Committee on Electoral Matters, highlighted the rationale behind the proposed amendments.
