NBC Enforces Stricter Broadcast Standards Ahead of 2027 Elections

The Nigerian Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has recently issued a formal notice to broadcast organizations across Nigeria, warning of stricter enforcement of the Nigeria Broadcast Code. This directive comes in response to a perceived decline in professional standards and an increase in ethical breaches, particularly in political programming.

The NBC highlighted a troubling trend of broadcast platforms being misused by political actors to disseminate hate speech and inflammatory content, which could incite public disorder. The commission emphasized the need for compliance with provisions of the 6th edition of the Nigeria Broadcast Code, particularly those related to fairness, accuracy, balance, and respect for constitutional authority.

The NBC's concerns are particularly acute as Nigeria approaches the 2027 general elections, and it has warned that violations could attract sanctions. The commission urged media organizations to strengthen their editorial controls and ensure that programming, especially during politically sensitive periods, adheres to established guidelines.
