NBC Warns Presenters Against Bias Ahead of Elections

The National Broadcasting Commission (NBC) has raised concerns regarding a growing lack of professionalism among broadcast presenters in Nigeria. In a statement issued on Friday via its Facebook page, the NBC warned that violations of the Nigeria broadcast code would attract sanctions, particularly as the country approaches the 2027 general elections.

The commission observed a disturbing trend where presenters increasingly breach ethical standards by expressing personal opinions as facts, failing to provide equal representation of opposing views, and allowing inflammatory content in programs. The NBC emphasized that actions violating the provisions of the code, which require accuracy and professional responsibility, would be considered Class B breaches.

It highlighted that the broadcast platform is being misused by political actors to air content capable of inciting disorder and spreading hate speech, undermining national unity. The NBC stressed the importance of compliance with the code, especially during critical electoral periods, urging broadcasters to ensure responsible discourse and maintain credibility.
