New NIMC Act Enhances Nigeria's Electoral Integrity

The Act, signed into law by President Bola Ahmed Tinubu on June 26, 2026, marks a historic milestone in Nigeria's legislative efforts over nearly two decades. It aims to improve the integrity of the voter register, which currently contains records of 136 million Nigerians, and facilitate the removal of ineligible entries.

The new online voter registration platform, built around the National Identification Number (NIN), is a major step toward simplifying the continuous voter registration process. The Act also addresses challenges such as impersonation and duplicate registrations, ensuring a credible electoral system for the upcoming elections.
