Opposition Parties Consider Boycott of 2027 Elections

Opposition parties in Nigeria are contemplating a boycott of the 2027 general elections due to allegations of bias against the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) and concerns over the legitimacy of the electoral process. Taminu Turaki, leading a faction of the People's Democratic Party (PDP), emphasized the necessity of a boycott to prevent the legitimization of a predetermined process that could favor President Bola Tinubu.

Omoyele Sowore of the African Action Congress and Bolaji Abdullahi of the African Democratic Congress also expressed support for the boycott, arguing that participation in a compromised election would be futile. The PDP is currently facing internal crises, with factions led by Turaki and others, which have resulted in multiple court cases regarding party leadership.

The Labour Party is similarly embroiled in leadership disputes, further complicating the opposition's position ahead of the elections. The situation reflects a broader concern about the integrity of the electoral process in Nigeria.
