NRM Aspirant Urges Opposition to Engage in 2027 Elections

On Wednesday, Franci Onyema, an aspirant from the National Rescue Movement (NRM), urged opposition parties to refrain from boycotting the 2027 general elections, stating that such a decision would undermine democratic participation in Nigeria. Speaking in Abuja during his official declaration to run for the presidency, Onyema stressed the importance of political actors engaging in the electoral process rather than withdrawing.

He criticized Nigeria's ongoing challenges, including insecurity, unemployment, and failures in education and healthcare, attributing these issues to poor leadership. Onyema committed to leading efforts to address these challenges and announced plans for high-level consultations with prominent figures, including former Presidents Olusegun Obasanjo and Goodluck Jonathan.

His appeal comes amid rising tensions within the opposition regarding amendments to the electoral act, which the Inter-Party Advisory Council warned could detrimentally affect Nigeria's multiparty democracy. The council criticized the removal of mandatory electronic transmission of results, warning that failure to address these issues could lead to a nationwide boycott of the elections.
