Party Leaders Call for Internal Democracy Ahead of 2027 Elections

On 12 September 2026, political party chairmen and stakeholders convened at News Central’s National Chairmen’s Dialogue in Abuja to advocate for stronger internal democracy within political parties as the 2027 general elections approach. Participants emphasized the need for parties to resolve internal differences through established mechanisms and to allow member participation in decision-making.

Agbo Gilbert, National Chairman of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP), stressed the importance of genuine internal democracy and highlighted vote buying and financial inducement as significant challenges to Nigeria’s electoral integrity. Elizabeth Okwori, National Chairman of the National Democratic Party, reminded political leaders that holding office is a mandate from voters, not an entitlement.

Samuel Memeh from the Democratic Leadership Alliance noted that credible elections require commitment from government and electoral institutions. The dialogue also addressed concerns regarding the neutrality of security agencies, with Deputy Inspector-General of Police Umar Nadada responding to these issues.
