Arewa Think Tank Backs INEC Chair for 2027 Elections

The Arewa Think Tank has expressed its support for Prof. Joash Amupitan, SAN, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), in his efforts to enhance the credibility of the upcoming 2027 general elections. The group commended INEC's plans to audit its electoral technology infrastructure, conduct penetration testing, and consider a mock presidential election as proactive measures that should be encouraged.

Muhammad Alhaji Yakubu, the convener of the Arewa Think Tank, emphasized the need for political actors to refrain from undermining the electoral process and to support efforts aimed at identifying weaknesses in the electoral system. He raised concerns about the threat of artificial intelligence-generated disinformation and urged INEC, political parties, and the media to develop mechanisms to counter fabricated content.

Yakubu called for transparency from INEC regarding its technological systems and urged political parties to prepare early for the elections, stressing that no one should derail Nigeria's democracy due to personal interests.
