INEC Promises Credible 2027 Elections Amid Challenges

On a visit to Gen. Abdulsalami Abubakar, the Chairman of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), Prof.

Joash Amupitan, assured that the commission would conduct free, fair, and credible elections in the upcoming 2027 general election, despite facing operational and legal challenges. Abdulsalami, a former Head of State and current Chairman of the National Peace Committee, urged INEC to remain impartial and provide a level playing field for all political parties, advising the commission to resist undue pressure.

He emphasized the critical nature of Amupitan's role during this period in Nigeria's democratic journey and warned that accusations of bias from politicians are inevitable. Abdulsalami also mentioned that the National Peace Committee would hold a strategic meeting on July 29 ahead of the Peace Accord signing for the Osun State governorship election scheduled for July 30, which he described as a significant test for the 2027 elections.
