Igini Warns of Dangers in 2027 Elections Due to Act Amendments

Mike Igini, a former official of the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC), expressed concerns regarding the proposed amendments to the electoral act, which he believes could pose significant dangers to presiding officers during the 2027 general elections. Speaking on a morning show on Arise Television, Igini highlighted the risks associated with reintroducing a system similar to past electoral processes, particularly in scenarios where there is no network connectivity for electronic result transmission.

He emphasized that this could create tension at polling units, as voters would be unable to confirm the availability of network services on their mobile devices. Igini noted that while political elites may not face these dangers, youth corps members deployed to polling units would bear the brunt of any potential violence.

He referenced past electoral incidents involving collusion among electoral officials, which compromised the authenticity of results, raising alarms about the implications of the proposed changes for the integrity and safety of the electoral process in Nigeria.
