Bashir Ahmed Urges INEC to Reconsider 2027 Election Dates

Bashir Ahmed, a former presidential aide, has called on the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to reconsider the scheduled dates for the 2027 general elections. The presidential and national assembly elections are set to take place on February 20, 2027, while the governorship and state assembly elections are scheduled for March 6, 2027.

Ahmed expressed his concerns via a message on X, highlighting that these dates fall within the holy month of Ramadan, a significant period for Muslims characterized by fasting, prayer, and spiritual reflection. He emphasized the importance of ensuring full participation in the electoral process and noted that the timing of the elections during Ramadan could present challenges for a large segment of the Muslim population, who may reduce worldly activities to focus on religious obligations.

Ahmed urged INEC to consider the diverse population of Nigeria and the significance of the Muslim community in the country, advocating for a reconsideration of the election dates to promote inclusivity and national cohesion.
