Akin Alabi Urges INEC to Adjust 2027 Election Dates

Akin Alabi, the chairman of the House of Representatives Committee, has raised concerns regarding the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) scheduling the 2027 general elections during the Islamic holy month of Ramadan. Alabi stated that holding elections on the proposed dates would violate electoral regulations, as Ramadan is a period dedicated to fasting, prayer, and spiritual reflection for Muslims.

He emphasized the need for a quick amendment to the Electoral Act to reduce the notice period required for INEC, which is currently set at 365 days. According to INEC's recent release, the presidential and national assembly elections are scheduled for February 20, 2027, while the governorship and state assembly elections are set for March 6, 2027.

Alabi's proposal aims to ensure that the elections do not coincide with Ramadan, thereby respecting the religious observances of the Muslim community.
