Tinubu Retains Shettima for 2027 Presidential Election

On July 7, 2023, President Bola Tinubu formally retained Vice President Kashim Shettima as his running mate for the 2027 presidential election. This submission was made to the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) to meet the deadline for presidential nominations.

The All Progressives Congress (APC) presented the nomination documents in Abuja, with the party's national chairman, Prof. Nentaw Yilwatda, overseeing the process.

The deadline for political parties to upload their presidential and National Assembly candidates is set for July 11, 2026. The APC's decision to keep the Muslim-Muslim ticket has sparked discussions about religious balance, particularly regarding the potential selection of a northern Christian as a vice-presidential candidate.

Despite these discussions, the APC has confirmed Tinubu and Shettima as their official candidates, with the party urging unity among its members ahead of the 2027 elections.
