Tinubu Warns Police on Professionalism Ahead of 2027 Elections

President Bola Tinubu threatened to sack any police officers involved in unprofessional conduct during the forthcoming 2027 general elections. This warning was issued on Monday at the 2026 Conference and Retreat for Senior Police Officers in Owerri, Imo State, where he was represented by the Secretary to the Government of the Federation, George Akume.

Tinubu urged officers to maintain high standards of professionalism and impartiality, stating that every Nigerian must feel protected by the police, regardless of their background. He stressed that the police should serve as a national institution rather than a political tool, which is essential for public trust and democratic credibility.

The President outlined that securing the electoral process involves protecting citizens and ensuring peaceful campaigns. He reaffirmed the government's commitment to police reforms, emphasizing the need for investment in personnel, training, and technology.

Tinubu commended Inspector General of Police Olatunji Rilwan Disu for efforts to address security challenges while reminding officers of the high expectations from the public regarding security and professionalism.
