Anyaoku Urges Nigerians to Vote for Restructuring in 2027

Emeka Anyaoku, the former Secretary-General of the Commonwealth, called on Nigerians to vote for political parties that commit to restructuring the country during the 2027 general elections. At a press conference in Lagos, following a meeting with the Patriot Concern Group, Anyaoku stressed the importance of a non-partisan national consensus to entrench democracy and address Nigeria's governance challenges.

He criticized the current constitutional framework, derived from the 1999 constitution, as inadequate in resolving issues such as insecurity, poverty, and political instability. Anyaoku proposed drafting a new democratic constitution through a special electoral assembly representing citizens nationwide.

He also expressed concern over the absence of ideologically driven politics among parties, which often leads to defections and a focus on personal attacks rather than substantive issues. Additionally, he warned about the high costs of political participation, which could exclude capable leaders, and urged the international community to monitor the 2027 elections for credibility and transparency.
