Civil Society Urges Political Parties to Strengthen Democracy

A non-denominational civil society organization has called on political stakeholders in Nigeria to strengthen internal democracy within political parties in preparation for the 2027 general elections. This call was made in a statement signed by the national chairman, Dr.

Mr. Yetund Akinluyi, and the national secretary, Revd.

Dr. Kolawole Verral, during the group's monthly meeting.

The organization congratulated emerging victors from ongoing party primaries but urged those who lost to explore internal mechanisms for redress rather than defecting. They stressed the importance of protecting Nigeria's democratic system and urged political actors to prioritize national interest over personal ambitions.

Additionally, the group called on the federal government to adopt innovative approaches to tackle the country's persistent security challenges, commending the efforts of Nigeria's security intelligence agencies while urging them to intensify intelligence gathering and resource deployment to apprehend bandits. The political temperature in Nigeria is already rising ahead of the 2027 elections, with ongoing discussions about the fragility of internal democracy within major political parties.
