Urgent Need for Kidney Transplants in Nigeria Revealed by Prof. Egbi

In his 65th inaugural lecture titled "Human Kidney: Casualties of Society and Maladies," Prof. Egbi reveals that 230,000 Nigerians require kidney transplants or dialysis.

The rise in CKD is attributed to non-communicable diseases like hypertension, diabetes, and obesity. Lifestyle factors such as modern dietary habits play a significant role in the prevalence of kidney diseases.

Environmental factors, including exposure to pollutants, also contribute to kidney problems. Poverty remains a major barrier to accessing adequate CKD management, with high treatment costs leading many patients to abandon care early.

The situation is particularly challenging in Bayelsa State, where 68% of tertiary hospital admissions are related to NCDs.
