High Prevalence of Visual Impairment Among Diabetic Patients in Africa

Experts report that 29% of diabetic patients in Sub-Saharan Africa experience visual impairment, with diabetic retinopathy and cataracts being common causes. A systematic review across 14 African countries found high prevalence rates of moderate visual impairment, severe visual impairment, and blindness among diabetic patients.

Factors contributing to visual impairment include poor blood sugar control, longer diabetes duration, obesity, lack of physical activity, and older age. The study underscores the urgent need for effective diabetes management and early screening to prevent serious complications.

The findings highlight the critical importance of addressing vision issues in diabetic patients to improve overall health outcomes in the region.
