31% of Nigerian Women Experience Physical Violence

A report indicates that 31% of Nigerian women aged 15-49 have experienced physical violence, while 9% have faced sexual violence, according to the Nigeria Demographic Health Survey. Between January and September 2025, there were 10,326 reported cases of gender-based violence.

Advocacy groups, including Cappa, emphasize the need for stronger protective policies for women, especially as they manage household resources and care for children amid economic difficulties. The report highlights that women face significant challenges, including limited access to basic services and economic inequities.

Currently, women occupy only 3.9% of legislative seats in Nigeria, one of the lowest rates globally. Advocacy for legislative reform includes proposals for special seats for women to enhance their representation and ensure their voices influence national policies.

The report calls for the swift passage of these bills to reflect the theme "Give Gain," aiming for true progress in Nigeria.
