Survey Reveals 56% of Gender Violence in Schools

A recent survey conducted by Illimi Children’s Fund indicates that 56% of school-based gender violence (GBV) occurs within school premises, with 1,530 students aged 10 to 17 participating across 18 public secondary schools in the Federal Capital Territory (FCT). The report, part of the Adolescents Safety Space (ASI) project, reveals alarming statistics: 47% of reported incidents involve verbal abuse, 13% physical abuse, and 12% sexual assault, with 28% experiencing attempts or actual rape.

The survey identifies peers as the leading perpetrators (47%), followed by strangers (29%) and family members (13%). Tovia Muo from Illimi Children’s Fund emphasizes the need for awareness programs and interventions focused on adolescent safety, particularly for girls.

Florence Dawon, Executive Chairman of the FCT Universal Basic Education Board (UBEB), stresses the importance of collaborative efforts among schools, parents, and communities to address these challenges and ensure the safety and well-being of adolescents.
