NUJ Calls for Independent Probe into Miners' Deaths

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has called for a full, independent, and transparent investigation into the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna, Niger State. NUJ's National President, Alhassan Yahya Abdullahi, stated that the incident raises grave public concern and urged authorities to clarify the circumstances surrounding the deaths, including potential negligence or misconduct.

The union emphasized the government's responsibility for the safety and humane treatment of individuals in custody. President Bola Tinubu has ordered a comprehensive investigation, and the Federal Government has formed a 10-member independent committee to examine the incident.

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has suspended 20 NSCDC officers linked to the case, and the Niger State NSCDC Commandant has also been suspended. The NUJ welcomed these actions but stressed the need for an impartial and transparent investigation into the conditions of detention and the medical circumstances of the deceased.
