NUJ Calls for Probe into 37 Miners' Deaths in Niger State

The Nigeria Union of Journalists (NUJ) has demanded a full, independent, and transparent investigation into the deaths of 37 suspected illegal miners while in the custody of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) in Minna, Niger State. The NUJ expressed that these deaths are of grave public concern and urged authorities to determine the circumstances surrounding the detainees' deaths, including any negligence, abuse, misconduct, or procedural breaches.

Alhassan Abdullahi, the National President of the NUJ, stated that the state assumes responsibility for the safety and humane treatment of citizens in custody, making any death in custody necessitate clear answers and accountability. The NUJ commiserated with the families of the deceased and welcomed the investigation decisions by the Federal and Niger State governments, including the suspension of the Niger State NSCDC Commandant.

President Bola Ahmed Tinubu has also directed a full and transparent probe, with the NUJ emphasizing the importance of the investigation's credibility.
