₦38 Billion Road by Buhari Collapses in Benue State

The ₦38 billion Oweto-Otukpo federal road in Benue State, commissioned by former President Muhammadu Buhari, has suffered significant structural failures just three years after its completion. This road was intended to enhance connectivity between Nasarawa and Benue states, reducing travel time and boosting trade.

However, recent inspections revealed extensive damage, including peeling asphalt, cave-ins, and exposed culverts, rendering large sections impassable. Motorists are now forced to divert to longer routes due to safety concerns.

The deterioration coincides with a sharp decline in traffic, attributed to increased insecurity along the corridor, prompting commuters to prefer safer routes. Heavy vehicles, including trailers and fuel tankers, have reportedly contributed to the road's rapid decline, as it was not designed to handle such loads.

Infrastructure experts have raised alarms about the road's construction quality, citing potential design defects and inadequate supervision. Calls for an urgent investigation into the project have emerged, as the road falls under federal jurisdiction, with no clear accountability from the Ministry of Works or the contractor, Reynold Construction Company Nigeria Limited.
