Free Cataract Surgeries for 380 Patients in Niger State

The Niger State Government, in collaboration with Qatar Charity Nigeria and the Middle East Clinic, Kano, has scheduled 380 cataract patients for free sight-restoring surgeries and provided medications to 2,000 others. This initiative was announced by Niger State Commissioner of Health, Dr Murtala Bagana, during the opening of a free eye care camp in Minna.

Over 2,300 individuals were screened, with around 700 receiving prescription eyeglasses. Dr Bagana emphasized the significance of this healthcare intervention, noting that cataracts are a leading cause of avoidable blindness, particularly among rural and vulnerable populations.

Under the leadership of Farmer Governor Mohammed Umaru Bago, the administration is committed to making quality healthcare accessible and affordable. The outreach model aims to bring eye care services directly to underserved communities, addressing barriers such as poverty and distance.

The program included free eye examinations, surgeries, and treatment for other eye diseases, conducted across five strategic centers in Niger State.
