383 aid workers killed in 2024 –UN

The UN marked World Humanitarian Day by revealing that 383 aid workers were killed in 2024, a 31% increase from the previous year, with Gaza claiming the lives of 181 humanitarian workers. The UN highlighted Sudan as a common perpetrator of these killings, with 60 people losing their lives there.

The organization emphasized that aid workers, including local staff, are often attacked in the line of duty or even at home. Additionally, 308 aid workers were wounded, 125 kidnapped, and 45 detained last year.

UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres stressed the importance of respecting and protecting humanitarian workers, stating that perpetrators must be brought to justice. The International Red Cross Red Crescent Movement condemned the killings, while the WHO reported health workers and patients being targeted, affecting entire communities.

The UN urged affected countries to hold perpetrators accountable.
