Nigeria's Metering Rate Reaches 61.5% Amid Unmet Demand

As of June 2026, over 4.8 million active electricity customers in Nigeria were still without meters, according to the Nigerian Electricity Regulatory Commission (NERC). The national metering rate increased to 61.51%, up from 60.22% in May, with 203,521 new meter installations across the 11 Distribution Companies (Discos).

The number of active customers rose from 12,520,435 in May to 12,589,486 in June, while metered customers increased from 7,540,318 to 7,743,839. Despite the improvements, the metering deficit remains significant, leading to disputes over estimated billing.

The Ibadan Electricity Distribution Company recorded the highest number of new installations at 80,643, followed by Kano with 44,753. Other notable installations included Abuja with 18,419 and Benin with 18,739.

The pace of metering varied significantly among Discos, with Eko achieving the highest penetration rate at 88.70%, while Jos had the lowest at 35.42%.
