Nigeria Meters 60% of Electricity Consumers Nationwide

The Federal Government of Nigeria announced that it has successfully metered around 60% of active electricity consumers in the country, as part of the ongoing rollout under Phase 1 of the $500 million World Bank-financed Distribution Sector Recovery Programme (DISREP). This initiative, which includes the Presidential Metering Initiative (PMI), aims to close the metering gap and eliminate arbitrary estimated billing for registered customers.

The update was provided during the second meeting of the National Council on Privatisation (NCP) for the year 2026, chaired by Vice-President Kashim Shettima at the State House in Abuja. Ayodeji Ariyo Gbeleyi, Director-General of the Bureau of Public Enterprises (BPE), reported that out of 1,033,000 meters delivered, 668,000 have been installed.

Additionally, regarding the implementation of the Electricity Act, Gbeleyi noted that 17 states have established their own State Electricity Regulatory Commissions since April 2024. Minister of Power, Joseph Olasunkanmi Tegbe, confirmed ongoing efforts to ensure value delivery in electricity and other sectors.
