Peter Obi: 80% of Nigeria's Primary Healthcare Centres Non-Functional

Peter Obi, the presidential candidate of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), expressed grave concerns regarding the state of Nigeria's Primary Healthcare Centres (PHCs), stating that approximately 80% are reportedly not functioning. He highlighted a troubling statistic that 97% of assessed facilities across 16 states failed to meet national staffing standards, indicating a broader national healthcare crisis.

Obi articulated that this situation poses a serious threat to the health and wellbeing of Nigerians, particularly affecting vulnerable populations such as pregnant women and children. He criticized the government's focus on infrastructure projects as indicators of development, asserting that true progress should be measured by improvements in citizens' lives, including operational health centres and the availability of qualified health workers.

Obi called for increased investment in primary healthcare, emphasizing the need for recruitment and retention of essential health workers and improved access to quality healthcare for all Nigerians, regardless of their economic status.
