Nigerian Senator Kingibe Debunks Claims of Legislative Blockade on E-Transmission, 85% Senators Support Reform

Nigerian Senator Ireti Kingibe, representing the Federal Capital Territory, addressed ongoing concerns regarding the Electoral Amendment Bill, clarifying that the majority of senators support electronic transmission of election results. Kingibe emphasized the importance of electoral reforms, including real-time uploading of results on the INEC portal.

She highlighted the inclusive process undertaken by the National Assembly to reform Nigeria's electoral framework, involving public hearings, policy retreats, consultations with stakeholders, and reports anchored on three pillars: electronic transmission, clear election timelines, and party primaries. Kingibe debunked claims of a rejection of reforms, stating that the Senate retained existing provisions while aligning with the original report.

Senate President Godswill Akpabio clarified the Senate's position, emphasizing the retention of provisions in the 2022 Electoral Act related to result transmission. Kingibe urged citizens to engage actively in the reform process to protect democratic rights.
