Ogun Residents Fear Disease from Abandoned Dumpsite

Residents of Ifo Local Government Area in Ogun State are raising alarms about an abandoned dumpsite along Sholu Kajola Road, which they describe as a significant health hazard and a source of discomfort. The dumpsite has worsened road conditions, making movement difficult and affecting six villages directly, including Sholu, Kajola, Rerin, Baamu, Ebiti, and Ilari.

Esther Adelakun, chairman of the Community Development Committee, expressed frustration over years of neglect by the state government, noting that despite promises to clear the waste, no action has been taken. The community has contributed funds to repair the damaged road, but the situation remains dire, with the stench from the dumpsite affecting local businesses and causing health concerns.

Shina Dosumu, vice chairman of the affected Community Development Association, indicated that the dumpsite has existed for 20 years and has created serious problems, especially during the rainy season. The state commissioner for the environment, Ola Oresanya, was contacted but did not provide a statement.
