Abia State Prepares Farmers for Heavy Rains in 2026

The Abia State government has issued a warning to farmers to prepare for heavy rains anticipated in 2026, as per the Nigerian Meteorological Agency's (NIMET) climate outlook. Dr. Cliff Agbaez, the state Commissioner for Agriculture, provided critical guidance, predicting annual rainfall between 1,800mm and 2,200mm, with the rainy season expected to begin in late March or early April and last until early November.

Peak rainfall is forecasted between June and September, increasing the risk of flooding, particularly in low-lying areas. Farmers are advised to cultivate raised ridges and maintain proper drainage systems to avoid flood-prone lands.

Agbaez also encouraged the adoption of climate-smart agricultural practices, including early-maturing and flood-resistant crop varieties. He assured that the ministry will continue to partner with NIMET to provide timely weather advisories in local languages and improve crop resilience.

Governor Alex Otti reaffirmed the state's commitment to agricultural transformation and support for farmers despite the challenges posed by climate change.
