Abia State Condemns Killing of Nigerian by South African Police

The Abia State Government condemned the killing of Chika Ibe, an Abia-born Nigerian from Lokpaukwu, Umunneochi Local Government Area, who was allegedly killed by members of the South African Police Service in Cape Town on Wednesday, July 23, 2026. A statement signed by Ferdinand Ekeoma, Special Adviser to the Governor on Media and Publicity, expressed shock and sadness over the incident.

Governor Alex Otti extended condolences to Mr. Ibe's family and called for justice.

Disturbing videos showed police officers allegedly suffocating Mr. Ibe, who was heard shouting, “I’m dying.” The state government demanded a swift, transparent, and independent investigation, urging South African authorities to halt violence against Nigerians.

Ekeoma noted that this incident follows reports of another Nigerian, Egwabor Patrick, who was shot and is receiving treatment for severe injuries. The government emphasized that Nigerians abroad deserve safety and dignity, condemning the ongoing xenophobic attacks.
