Nigeria Demands Investigation into Killing of National in SA

The Consulate General of Nigeria in Johannesburg condemned the killing of Nigerian national Ibeh Chika Simon during a South African Police Service operation in Bellville, Cape Town, on July 23, 2026. The consulate described the circumstances of Simon's death as questionable and expressed concern for another Nigerian, Egwabor Patrick Chuks, who was injured during the same operation and is currently receiving treatment.

Videos of the incident showed the aftermath of Simon's killing, with a crowd expressing outrage towards the police. The consulate's statement, dated July 25, emphasized the alarming pattern of extrajudicial killings and misconduct against foreign nationals in South Africa.

It called for an immediate, transparent investigation by South African authorities and insisted that perpetrators must be held accountable. The consulate acknowledged that while Nigerians in South Africa should obey local laws, allegations of wrongdoing should not lead to unlawful killings.
