Obasanjo Reveals Abubakar's Efforts for Abiola's Release

On a Saturday event honoring Abdulsalami Abubakar's 84th birthday, former President Olusegun Obasanjo disclosed that Abubakar was working to secure the release of MKO Abiola, the June 12, 1993 presidential election winner, prior to Abiola's unexpected death. Kola Abiola was in Abuja when the news broke.

Obasanjo praised Abubakar as a great military leader and a patriot, recounting his efforts to stabilize Nigeria after General Sani Abacha's death in June 1998. He noted Abubakar's swift actions to defuse political crises and facilitate Nigeria's return to democratic governance, which was accomplished within a year of taking office.

Former President Goodluck Jonathan also commended Abubakar for his dedication to peace and progress in Nigeria. The event featured the presentation of three books about Abubakar, including an autobiography and a festschrift, highlighting his legacy and contributions to the nation.
